Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Cleopas), and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:25-27 NLT)
We watch another amazing moment on the cross as Jesus, wracked with pain and struggling for breath, stops to speak to his Mom. Clearly Jesus still has enough time and energy left to be a good son. With a few simple words Jesus provides for the care of his only earthly parent as his life ebbs away. In these holy moments we watch as a faithful son takes care of some family business. Jesus passes the care of his much-loved mother to his best friend John. Here near the end, Jesus makes sure the one who nursed and nurtured him and now had stayed nearby when virtually everyone else hid - is properly cared for. I’m not leaving you alone mother - I am passing your care to our broader family and John will make sure you’re OK. What a good son he is.
PRAY:
Lord Jesus we remember that you were not only the Son of God, but you were also the son of Mary. She loved her miracle baby boy and watched and cheered you on for your entire 33 years and you loved her in return. Here at the last you remind us that in Christ we are all family and should care for each other. Lord please help us show our love for You, in the way we love your family especially widows and those without other family. May we be family to each other. In your name Amen.
